| | A critical component of the Center's multifaceted strategic economic development strategy includes the implementation of a comprehensive workforce development initiative that is designed to meet the education and training needs of New York's bioscience industry. Many of the Center's workforce programs have been the result of a proactive response to the evolving needs and demands of the dynamic bioscience industry. The programs address the needs of industry as well as provide both undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities that enhance student learning and promote career exploration. Successful programs affiliated with the Center: Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program This program was conceived in response to the increasing demand from industry and graduate students for opportunities to enhance existing academic and technical curriculum with industry knowledge and insight. The Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program is a professional development program that seeks to provide students who have a scientific background with a comprehensive understanding of the bioscience business environment. The program is designed to provide the student with an in-depth introduction to life science product development cycles, regulatory practices, financial models, managerial challenges, future trends and needs in the life sciences, and ethical issues facing the industry today. The program will provide students with the insights they will need to develop their long-term career strategies and an understanding of how they can increase their value to potential employers. The program enables current life sciences graduate students and post-docs to leverage their excellent scientific training with industry knowledge as well as provide current employees of life sciences companies with insight to enhance their productivity and contribute more effectively to corporate goals.
Significant program highlights:
- 175 students from New York State Research and Academic institutions have graduated from the program since 2004
- More than 75 industry professionals at the Director, Vice President and CEO levels have
participated in the program as guest speakers, many speaking for multiple year
- Successful graduates of the program secured work in a diverse range of positions both in the academic sector and in the bioscience industry
- Graduate snapshots: Corporate Research and Development Scientists, Scientific Advisors at law firms, Licensing Associates, Marketing and Communication Associates, Scientific Sales Associates, Regulatory Affairs Professionals, University Professors and more.
- Program graduates often participate in industry internships through opportunities facilitated by the center for Biotechnology. Participating companies include OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc, Forest Laboratories, Proctor and Gamble, Fonar, InGenious Targeting Laboratories and others.
- In 2007, a successful grant from the US Department of Commerce enabled the launch of a pilot distance learning section the program in which the program was video conferenced live to
students at both Syracuse and Buffalo.
- An alumnus from the 2004 Manhattan program started his own biotech venture, BioNano
Systems, Inc after being motivated by his participation in the 2004 program.
- Supportive program corporate partners have included leading bioscience companies: Acorda Therapeutics, Cornerstone Pharmaceuticals, Vasomedical. Inc., OSI Pharmaceuticals, Forest
Laboratories, Pfizer, Inc., Nanoprobes, Inc., Morgan and Finnegan LLP, E-Z-EM Inc., Pall
Corporation and Target Health.
- Graduates of the program have developed the Alumni Network which includes an
Executive Committee. This strong network offers opportunities for ongoing professional career
development, social and professional networking opportunities as well as internship and
job opportunities to the alumni of the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry program
- Current affiliations include Stony Brook University's MBA program, Stony Brook University's Department of Biomedical Engineering MS/Ph.D. program, and Columbia University's MA in Biotechnology program
Strongly interdisciplinary, this program draws its faculty and courses directly from the bioscience industry and is fully taught by senior level industry professionals from leading bioscience companies including Pfizer, OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc, Pall Corporation, AGI Dermatics, The Collaborative Group, Acorda Therapeutics and Forest Laboratories. The program is complimented by the participation of New York's world class academic and research institutions. Industry Specific Training Programs The Center continues to meet the needs of industry by creating innovative and industry focused programs. In 2004, the Center developed a customized 3-day program [A Comprehensive Introduction to the Fundamentals of the Biotechnology Industry: From Discovery to Market] for Sartorius Corporation. This $30K program is funded through a grant from New York State and is delivered in May 2005. Annual Life Sciences Industry Career Development Conference, New York City.
The success of the Alternative Careers in the Bioscience Industry Seminar Series at Stony Brook University in 2001 led to the expansion of the program to New York City in 2002. Presented in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY), this one day conference attracted more than 170 graduate students from more than 20 research and academic institutions from New York State. Industry Support The Collaborative Group has been a dynamic supporter of the Center's undergraduate internship programs since 1996. More than 25 interns have been placed at the Collaborative Group. Interns have engaged in a variety of activities ranging from report writing, analysis, presentations, research, management, and administration. "The Center's internship programs provide students with an invaluable learning opportunity to apply their intellectual skills in a dynamic industrial environment", states MeiLin Wan, Corporate Communications Supervisor. "Our interns have been an excellent resource in helping to further develop projects or to bring these projects to completion." Joe Scaduto, now Business Development Manager at the Center for Biotechnology, participated in the Undergraduate Internship in Intellectual Property Management (summer of 1999) in the Technology Management and Legal Department of the Collaborative Group, Ltd.
" The internship really helped me gain an understanding of the business side of the biotechnology industry, and helped shape my career path. Shortly after completing the internship, I was accepted to a Masters in Biotechnology program at Northwestern University where I was able to participate in classes at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. The internship had set the stage for significantly expanding my skill base outside traditional scientific training." more» Graduate Internship in Biotechnology and Patent Law Program This program provides third and fourth year graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, with an opportunity to work in a legal environment conducting research into prior art and learning the basic principles of intellectual property rights. Interns provide the law firms with their in-depth knowledge of the science behind the product. This program has been extremely popular among students considering an "alternative" career path in law and industry. Law firms and interns are able to explore mutually beneficial long-term relationships with opportunities for recruitment as Scientific Advisors, Patent Bar Attorneys and subsidized tuition for law school. *The Center for Biotechnology is currently running internships for domestic students of the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program who are currently enrolled in a New York State academic institution only. Edna Gergel, a SUNY Stony Brook Fall 2000 Patent Law Intern had this to say of her experience at Hoffman and Baron: " Work in patent law, as I discovered, is a wonderful alternative to bench science. Work in an intellectual property firm was imbued with a scientific atmosphere, but one that was free from the pressures of experimentation. The biology I reviewed was cutting edge, as the developments involved were often not yet released to the scientific and medical communities." more»
