Bioscience will be a key economic driver in the 21st century, and will require a well educated workforce capable of translating basic discoveries into commercial products and services. The Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry program seeks to provide life scientists with a comprehensive introduction to the bioscience business environment including evolving business models, product development cycles, regulatory issues, finance, managerial challenges and future trends in the life sciences.

Program Goal

The program aims to provide current life sciences graduate students, post-docs, and industry professionals with an understanding of what drives the corporate decision making process, how to contribute most effectively to the goals of the bioscience organization, and how to utilize this understanding to advance their own careers.

Benefits

Graduates of the program will

  • Understand the process by which a technology becomes a product
  • Gain insight into the factors that influence corporate decision making
  • Appreciate how each department or function within a company contributes to corporate objectives
  • Understand how they can best contribute to corporate goals
  • Be better prepared to navigate their own careers
  • Gain the contacts that will help them be successful

Fully taught by industry professionals, The program consists of 80 hours of highly interactive instruction organized into four (4) complimentary modules. Program Format

The program consists of three 8-week sessions and one session over 3 consecutive Saturdays. Each of the 8-week sessions consists of one 2½-hour class per week, offered in two locations on Long Island at Stony Brook University and in Manhattan at Stony Brook Manhattan. The Spring 2008 program begins January 29th and concludes May 22nd. Students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to participate in an industry internship after successful completion of the program. Students who complete all sessions will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by the Center for Biotechnology.

Corporate Mentoring

A critical component of the program is the extensive mentoring extended to all participants in the program. All students enrolled will be given the opportunity to extend their learning experience by interacting with industry executives in diverse fields. A major benefit of the program is the first hand knowledge gained from industry executives with extensive experience and insight into the dynamic and evolving bioscience industry.

Corporate Fellowships

Our corporate sponsors have offered a limited number of paid fellowships that will reimburse program costs and include a full-time (450 hour min) paid internship at their corporate location. These fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Click here for fellowships that are currently available.

"To be competitive in industry, biosciences graduates must understand the intricate process of translating basic research into innovative, market driven products. Further, these graduates must be able to navigate the complex pathways of intellectual property management and the regulatory affairs of agencies such as the FDA. There is a critical need for programs that encourage life sciences students to integrate industry-relevant training and experience with their basic science education."
