Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Internship Program: Biotechnology & Patent Law Importance: Patents and intellectual property rights are critical to the success of the biotechnology industry. Without patent protection, biotechnology companies cannot afford the risk and expense of bringing a new product to market. Goal: Scientists who are unfamiliar with patent law may make missteps in protecting their intellectual property. This program will provide third and fourth year graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, with an opportunity to work in a legal environment conducting research into prior art and learning the basic principles of intellectual property rights. This insight will be useful to students interested in remaining in academia, as well as those who wish to pursue a career in industry. It may also open new career paths for students who wish to pursue a law degree. Guidelines: Applicants must be third year or later graduate students and have completed all “core” courses and qualifying examinations. Students with equivalent qualifications will be considered on a case by case basis. Each internship will comprise one semester, either the fall or spring semester. Permission of the Thesis Adviser and Graduate Program Director is necessary. Postdoctoral fellows must have the approval of their adviser. A final paper that describes an actual legal research project conducted during the internship will be submitted at the end of the semester. *The Center for Biotechnology is currently running internships for domestic students of the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program who are currently enrolled in a New York State academic institution only. Financial Considerations: The sponsoring legal firm is responsible for providing financial support for each intern to The Research Foundation of SUNY and a 15% Research Foundation IDC. The stipend amount will be dependent on the level of qualifications of the intern. The Director of the Center for Biotechnology will act as the principal investigator and direct funds to cover the intern’s stipend for the semester of internship. The stipend will be paid directly to the intern by the Center, prorated equally over the period of the internship. Arrangements for the payment of health and other benefits, and adjustment of the intern’s grant or departmental funding during the internship are the responsibility of the intern and the faculty adviser. Application Procedures: Complete Part I of the Application Form, and obtain the signatures required in Part III. This application, along with a résumé or curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation, is submitted to the Center for Biotechnology. The Center will submit applications that meet the programs guidelines to the law firm’s representative, who will make the final decision in choosing an intern. Biomedical Engineering (BME) Graduate Industry Internship Program
The Center for Biotechnology is proud to support the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University's Graduate Industry Internship Program. The goal of the internship program is to create internships at biomedical engineering and biotechnology companies in New York State for graduate students seeking a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering. This progam is supported in part by the Whitaker Foundation. The Center for Biotechnology will play an active role in coordinating the internship program. The Center will facilitate the participation of New York State companies in the program and provide on-going feedback and evaluation of the program. The program will enable the Center to expand its already successful internship programs while complimenting an overall workforce development strategy as it relates to harnessing the intellectual and economic potential of New York State’s graduate student population.
