Charles S. Ryan, J.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Ryan is responsible for the development and management
of Collaborative's intellectual property portfolio, negotiating
license agreements, and handling general legal matters. He is responsible
for developing strategies to successfully patent and market the
Company's proprietary technology platforms. Dr. Ryan has over 6
years of experience in patent procurement and intellectual property
litigation. Most recently, Dr. Ryan was an associate at Darby &
Darby in New York City. In addition to his legal experience, Dr.
Ryan has presented and published numerous legal and scientific papers.
Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor with the School of Dental
Medicine at Stony Brook. Dr. Ryan received a Bachelor of Arts with
a major in Chemistry from the College of Wooster in 1986, and a
doctorate in Oral Biology and Pathology from the State University
of New York at Stony Brook in 1990. In 1993, Dr. Ryan received a
law degree from Western New England College School of Law.

Anil
Dhundale, Ph.D.

Dr. Anil Dhundale will speak on the opportunities
and avenues that students can explore in corporate R&D. He has
a B.S in Chemistry from Queens College of CUNY, an M.S in Clinical
Chemistry from C.W Post of LIU and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology
from SUNY at Stony Brook. For more than 12 years, he engaged in
corporate R&D at OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a Long Island-based
biotechnology company. During this time Dr. Dhundale was instrumental
in the development of a molecular biology research products division
within Oncogene Science Research Products, FDA approval and establishment
of GMP manufacturing facilities for a DNA diagnostic product for
CML, and in all phases of drug discovery, including novel assay
development and high-throughput screening. In July 1998, Dr. Dhundale
became the Center for Biotechnology's Director for Scientific Affairs
and in July, 2000 was appointed the Director for the University
DNA Microarray Facility (UDMF).At the Center, he now focuses on
the identification of commercially promising research, providing
guidance in the development of technology toward commercial goals,
and to the facilitation of research collaborations between academic
scientists and the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical devices
industries. Dr. Dhundale's presentation will provide an invaluable
insight to career opportunities in corporate R&D.

Robert Shorr, Ph.D.

Dr. Robert Shorr's presentation will provide a rare
insight into the real world opportunities of combining business
and financing with bioscience ventures. It is a highly rewarding
and challenging career path, with lucrative returns on investment.
Dr. Shorr has more than 20 years of experience in the financing
and commercial development of pharmaceutical and biotechnology ventures,
planning and direction of research and clinical development, providing
direction of strategic business planning, partnering, and marketing
of pharmaceutical and biotechnology ventures. He has participated
in venture capital angel and seed stage vehicles, realizing more
than $100MM in financing from institutional and private funds and
other biotechnology companies including Schering Plough, Bristol-Myers
Squibb, Eli Lilly, and Baxter Healthcare and is intimately involved
in more than 30 other deals worth more than $100MM.
Dr. Robert Shorr holds a B.S in Biology from SUNY Buffalo and a
D.I.C and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of London, Imperial
College of Science and Technology. He is currently the Director
Business Development for the Center for Advanced Technology State
University of New York at Stony. He is also VP Science and Technology/Chief
Science Officer for United Therapeutics/Unither and a principal
in Altira Capital and Consulting LLC, Cornerstone Ventures, Cybex
Pharmaceuticals Corporation and in HRS Holding LLC. Previously,
he served as V.P. of Science & Technology for Enzon, Inc., and was
a founder of AT Biochem.
He is an accomplished scientist with more than a 100 inventions.
Among his more than 50 issued or pending patents are ones for novel
electrophoresis materials, which are now routinely used for DNA
sequencing (Long Ranger) and protein separations. He has published
over 150 technical articles and invented, developed, and commercialized
drugs, reagents, and diagnostics worth more than $1.5 Billion per
year. |
Daniel Yarosh, Ph.D.
President and Chairman

Daniel Yarosh is President and Chairman of AGI Dermatics,
located in Freeport, LI, NY. He received his B.A. in Biology from
Macalester, College, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1976, and his Ph.D.
in molecular biology from the University of Arizona College of Medicine
in 1978. He completed a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral
Fellowship at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1980. He was a Staff
Fellow and then Cancer Expert at the National Cancer Institute in
Bethesda before founding AGI Dermatics in 1985. AGI Dermatics is
a biopharmaceutical company manufacturing dermatology pharmaceuticals
and cosmetic ingredients with an emphasis on liposomes and DNA repair.
AGI Dermatics has been named as one of Long Island's 50 fastest
growing technology companies for 3 consecutive years.

Philip N. Sussman is Executive Vice President of Corporate Development
at Memory Pharmaceuticals Corp., a New York-based biopharmaceutical
company. He was previously Senior Vice President of Finance and
Corporate Development and CFO of Cadus Pharmaceutical Corporation.
While at Cadus he established strategic alliances with pharmaceutical
companies that provided over $70 million in financing to Cadus,
including $40 million in equity investments. Prior to joining Cadus
in 1993, he was Director of Strategy and Business Development for
Ciba-Geigy Corp.'s Pharmaceuticals Division, where he was instrumental
in establishing strategic alliances with biotechnology companies.
He earned an M.S. in biotechnology from Manhattan College, a master's
degree in management with a concentration in finance from the Sloan
School of Management, M.I.T., and a B.S. in physics from the State
University of New York at Stony Brook. |
Jules
T. Mitchel, Ph.D.

Dr. Jules T. Mitchel is President of Target Health Inc., a New
York City based CRO. Dr. Mitchel holds a Ph.D. in Biology from NYU
and an MBA in Financial Economics from Pace University. He has extensive
expertise in Regulatory Affairs, including FDA interactions and
all submissions, Strategic Planning, Clinical Research Management,
Biostatistics and Data Management, Medical Writing, Good Manufacturing
Practices (GMP) and other support services to the pharmaceutical
industry. Dr. Mitchel has broad base pharmaceutical experience in
drugs, biologics, devices and diagnostics including four NDA submission,
many FDA meetings and IND/IDE submissions, study reports, manuscripts
and strategic planning. Areas of expertise include but are not limited
to, Women's Health, Dermatology, Antimicrobials, Pharmacokinetics,
Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Natural Products, Oral Care, Oncology
and Regulatory Affairs. Dr. Mitchel has held industry positions
at American Home Products, Pfizer Laboratories and Pfizer Consumer
Health Care and academic positions at New York Medical College,
Cornell University School of Medicine and NYU School of Medicine.

Jason M. Alter, Ph.D.
Marketing Manager
IBM Life Sciences Company
Dr. Alter graduated from Alfred University with a
B.A. in Biology and History. Subsequently he earned an M.S. degree
in Microbiology from Texas A&M University and his Ph.D. in Molecular
Biology from Binghamton University. Dr. Alter did a postdoctoral
fellowship at Schering Plough Pharmaceuticals examining the cellular
location of fibronectin and collagen a1(IV) messenger RNAs during
intimal lesion development in a balloon angioplasty model of vascular
smooth muscle cell proliferation.
Dr. Alter worked for the Pall Corporation in a series
of marketing positions where he progressed to Vice President of
Marketing for the Specialty Materials Division selling into the
diagnostics, molecular biology and medical device marketplaces.
Dr. Alter was responsible for all marketing efforts of the Specialty
Materials Division including Internet programs, co-marketing, global
advertising, pricing, budget, direct mail campaigns, etc.
Dr. Alter worked for Packard BioScience Corporation
as a Director of Business Development focusing on corporate acquisitions
and technology licensing. Dr. Alter's efforts focused on technologies
and companies that supported Packard's rapid penetration of the
drug discovery, genomics and proteomics marketplaces. Dr. Alter
was an active participant in the acquisition of General Scanning
Lumonics Inc. (GSLI) a leading manufacturer of confocal laser scanners
used for fluorescence detection on biochips. Dr. Alter also had
an integral role in initiating the collaborative relationship between
Packard and Oxford Glycosciences and was sole architect of the Xenometrix
licensing agreement.
Dr. Alter is currently Marketing Manager for the new
Life Sciences Division of IBM. In his current role, Dr. Alter is
at the intersection of cutting edge biotechnology and information
technology. His current responsibilities include managing integrated
marketing campaigns for IBM IT solutions to the genomics, proteomics,
drug discovery, and biochip markets. In addition, he is responsible
for the awareness campaign for IBM's new solution (DiscoveryLink)
for integrated data management specifically for the life sciences. |
