NY Infrastructure Developed

The Center has also fostered a comprehensive infrastructure to support the biotechnology industry in New York State. Chief among its accomplishments has been its role in the creation of the Long Island High Technology Incubator Program (LIHTI), the New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA), and the Long Island Life Science Initiative

The Long Island High Technology Incubator (LIHTI)

The LIHTI program was established by the Center in 1986 in response to the demand by start-up biotechnology companies for affordable laboratory space and research services. The program's success lead to its expansion beyond biotechnology to include other high technology areas such as new materials, computer hardware and software, and multi-media. An independent, not-for-profit organization was established in 1991 to manage the program, and a 42,000 square foot dedicated facility was built to house these diverse entrepreneurial ventures. The facility features modern laboratories, shared office services, and the ancillary benefits associated with its location on the campus of University at Stony Brook. Start-up firms gain access to extensive library collections, animal services, and sophisticated research equipment. An additional 20,000 square foot expansion was completed in 1995 and includes a pilot-scale, contract biomanufacturing facility.

New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA)

As a founding member of the New York Biotechnology Association, the Center for Biotechnology has had a far-reaching impact on this statewide, non-profit trade association. With more than 240 corporate and institutional members, the Association represents the collective interests of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, suppliers, major research institutions, and professional service providers. Working to ensure a favorable economic and regulatory environment for the biotechnology industry, NYBA continues to forge an ambitious and effective agenda for the State's biotechnology industry. NYBA also serves as a point of access to the collective resources of its membership, facilitating partnerships and other business relationships. The NYBA Annual Meeting, which attracts more than 350 industry executives from throughout the tri state region, and other NYBA sponsored events, provide an excellent opportunity for the industry to interact.

Long Island Life Sciences Initiative (LILSI)

The mission of the Long Island Life Sciences Initiative is to support the continuing growth of a vibrant, globally competitive Life Sciences community.

The goal is emphatically not to create a new organization, but to create a forum and an arena through which existing entities and organizations through tightly focused, ad hoc organizational structures can accomplish specific tasks and projects to keep the life sciences vital and growing as a key Long Island technology industry.

The Long Island Life Sciences Initiative was conceived by The Collaborative Group, a leader of Long Island's life sciences industry. The concept has been advanced with the help of many organizations and individuals, including the Center for Biotechnology at SUNY Stony Brook, which has accepted responsibility for the ongoing administration of the Initiative.

Technology Development

In addition, with the Center's new focus on technology development, the Center is allowing companies better access to commercially promising technologies. This emphasis will benefit companies by

  • Increasing their competitiveness in the marketplace
  • Accelerating new product development
  • Decreasing risk & time to market
  • Increasing corporate revenue
  • Fueling new company formation
