The Center's Research Focus

The Center's main research focus is in medical biotechnology, including molecular and cell biology, medical laboratory technology, drug discovery, high-throughput screening, and drug development. An active research effort is in functional genomics technologies within the Center's Applied Bioscience Laboratory

The Center for Biotechnology is engaged in the following areas of research:

  • Cell and Developmental Biology
  • Chemical Synthesis and Pharmaceutical Discovery
  • Oral Biology and Skin Research
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy
  • Infectious Disease and Virology
  • Biomedical Engineering

For more information on the Center's research interests, please contact Dr. Clint Rubin at 631-632-8521.

The Center's Technology Development Program

We support a broad range of commercially promising research that is competitively evaluated from both a scientific and business perspective.
The Center for Biotechnology invests a significant portion of its resources in the discovery and development of academic technologies toward commercial goals. We support a broad range of commercially promising research that is competitively evaluated from both a scientific and business perspective. Our advisors are selected from a network of scientists, engineers, and technology officers from both the academic and industrial sectors. Senior staff at the Center offer many years of experience-based advice in the commercial development of early-stage biomedical technologies. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of technologies that the Center feels it can add value to prior to out-licensing to industry, as well as on those technologies that have the potential to support new company formation in New York State.

Critical Path Management
The Center for Biotechnology seeks to partner with faculty who would like to see their basic research discoveries translated into technology that will improve the quality of healthcare with novel diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, or to enhance biomedical research through the invention and development of new research technologies. The Center also has the research staff and facilities to discover and develop novel technologies collaboratively with faculty within its own Applied Bioscience Laboratory. Technologies that are developed in partnership with the Center may benefit from a variety of resources including:

  • Market research and commercial assessment of the technology opportunity
  • Guidance with specific aims to enhance potential commercial value
  • Development of critical path management strategy for commercialization
  • Financial investment to accomplish technical goals (see ITD Program)
  • Hands-on technical support utilizing the Center’s Applied Bioscience Laboratory and/or Custom DNA Microarray Facility as appropriate
  • Introduction to potential industry or academic collaborators
  • Exploration of external financing opportunities
